Who knew that the Lord was going to take their experience and passion of 20 years and turn it into new careers?

We have learned in life and business over and over again that even when it doesn’t make complete sense, God can be trusted to provide exactly what you need when you need it.

Here are 3 things we would do in our own kitchen that we loved about this one…

1. Double dishwashers really makes entertaining large crowds so much easier! This family hosts huge crowds at their lake home most weekends through the summer. Tons of kids, lots of hungry adults make for endless loads of dishes. This does the trick!

2. HUGE island. This really fulfilled several items on the wish list. More storage, more prep space, and lots of room for people to sit around and gather while food is being prepared.

3. Double oven. I mean, we love to host people at our home and if you go home hungry, it’s your own fault! Doubling the ability to roast veggies, bake brownies, and bake a steak before searing on the grill (our favorite way to cook a delicious steak!) really gives you more freedom to be with your guests and family.

3 Design Tips from this successful AirBnB that you can use in your home.

1. Carry a principal color into each room of the house and outside to create a cohesive, purposeful look.

I love navy. Always have and always will. We carried this dusty navy color into each room and I think it helped this 900 square foot home feel like one big spacious room.

2. The paint, cabinets, and tile were all timeless colors.

For this project, we wanted to make sure each of these elements had personality but not obviously anchored in a specific design era.

This way, if the owner decided to update the aesthetic, they don’t have to majorly overhaul the expensive aspects of the home like tile or cabinetry. They only need to swap out furniture.

3. Hardwood floors

It is more expensive up front to install. However, not only is it a timeless look, real hardwoods can be sanded and stained a couple of times over its lifetime.

There is a time and a place for LVP. But don’t be pressured to install LVP just because it is “cheaper”. If you find mold under this waterproof material, it can be costly to remediate and the same product may not be in stock anymore.

This kitchen was a good exercise in space planning. We originally had the island going the other direction and a long kitchen table between the island and living room space.

In our minds’ eye, and in concept, it looked so good! 😂Then once we started graphing it out on paper and walking the space once drywall went up, we could all tell it was not 👏going 👏to 👏work👏.

At the end of the day, we think we ended up with a MUCH better outcome— an island that seats 6 people in really comfy chairs.

Let’s talk about windows and how to upgrade an old house to stand the next 100 years

There are a lot of things that can be grandfathered in while doing inspections and engineering checks with regards to older homes.

We could have gotten away with some of these things but we think it is really important to do what we can to make a house structurally sound.

It takes more time
And certainly more money

And sometimes people say “why didn’t you leave it the way it was? You ruined all the character!”

But we are thinking of the next generation living in these homes and want to make sure we do everything we can to help them last.

This beautiful home has some stories to tell— built in the early 1900s, it was a cornerstone of the Caraleigh Mill neighborhood. This little community of homes housed workers of what used to be a cotton mill and fertilizer plant near downtown Raleigh NC.

We were commissioned to design this home to be a cozy, memorable short term rental and still highlight the historic features.

We could have taken the easy road, but we like to sleep well at night knowing people are safe in our homes.

Sometimes engineers and inspectors will let things pass because certain things get “grandfathered in” as “preexisting” building codes.

We love working with homes that are built in the late 1800s up to the 1970s and codes were certainly different then. So you COULD get by with a lot.

This family found their shower was leaking and causing moisture issues into their crawlspace.

So they took to Facebook to find projects of contractors they liked and found us.

A couple months later, wham bam thank you ma’am, their old bathroom was torn out and we installed some of the most gorgeous materials we have worked with to date.

Now they have their dream primary bathroom. We even made sure that Grandma could clear the doorway with her walker, have a nice bench to sit on, and have an easily accessible handheld shower.

Another beautiful transformation!

This is one of the most deserving of couples to get a bathroom makeover!

When we first met this couple, they had just accepted a couple of little kiddos in the foster system. These kids require a ton of time, energy, and of course, love and attention. Without hesitation, they welcomed those precious kiddos into their home, despite the inevitable construction chaos about to ensue.

I got the privilege of watching these children really awaken in response to the love and care they have received from this couple over the past few months of visiting their home.
